The Supreme Exodus, is an ongoing project in which Guzman is inspired by the recent history of migration in Latin-America. Antonio José Guzman constructed his monumental project from images of migration and demonstrations in Latin-America and the graphic image of his own DNA. He examines views on socio-cultural identity and migration problems. His installations can be seen as a data visualisation of a continuous investigation into displacement and exile in Latin-America and the rest of the world. The Monumental Paintings from the Supreme Exodus (The Fierce Sun series), research on Afro Latin-American traditions and the African connection that thousands of migrants have in the continent. Guzman used a special method to work on this series. First, he silkscreened out his own DNA sequence to thirty paintings. Then, he prepared sketches and he worked on all the panels at the same time, applying red and black colours to all thirty panels before continuing on to the next color. Each painting measures about two hundred by hundred forty centimeters. The series starts with a panel showing a large crowd of migrants crossing a river in Venezuela. The style is bold and direct, stylised to suggest emotion and movement. The series continues with panels that show abstract trees, migrants in motorcycles and angry dogs, followed by repeated paintings of moving DNA. The works resemble the walls of migrant shelters and many of the paintings use mythology from the Afro Yoruba religion. Made possible by the generous support of the Mondriaan Fund. He calls this “Sociological mapping”. In the project ‘El Organo Oriental. Transillumination Sequence #1’ (ELOO) project, Guzman places an original Cuban organ in a large space so that the sound is given free rein. The enlarged sheets made by a robot laser engraver with the unique organ score fill the space. This makes the DNA not only audible but also visible. The scores were also used to be played with a marimba, Piano and an artificial intelligence music sensor interfaced robot. Punch cards are cardboard cards with holes. These punch cards controlled mechanical devices, before the invention of computers. The punch cards were the software for the machines. In an organ punch cards control the organ music. This, not only of territories, but also of communities and nations. The project focuses on politically divided, historical and contemporary socio-political contexts. Spheres of Fire researches tactile objects that entice viewers to cross different time zones, unexplored worlds and realms; bringing us into what Guzman calls time travel perceptions. Investigating abstraction and dimensionality in times of migration and how this diasporas has been shaped since the times of Moses. The work consists of indigo block printed textile banners. The textile sculpture is made up of geometric patterns. These patterns are interwoven with the abstract matrix of intercultural DNA sequences. The sequences embody a global connection between different cultures. The various elements in the installation refer to history, future and melancholy. On the other hand they refer to invisible bodies, loss, despair and hope. The installation is haptic and accessible, a window door that you can enter. The hanging textiles materializes the viewer. The architectural structure is intended to be experienced both optically and physically. You literally have to look through the first layer to get a better picture. The installation literally sets the visitor – and thus the exhibition – in motion. Indigo dye is intricately linked with histories of trade, of forced migration and of the cross-pollination between peoples. In his recent body of works, titled Electric Dub Station for which he collaborates with Iva Jankovic, Guzman investigates the transatlantic and colonial history of Indigo. Indigo, known as the ‘king of dyes’ has been a symbol of political powers for thousands of years. The exhibition Interwoven Histories explores the intricate connections between textile and marginalised histories through the lens of contemporary art. Orbital Ignition is part of the Electric Dub Station Series in which Antonio José Guzmán and Iva Jankovic research cultures of the Black Atlantic (Paul Gilroy) and Migratory Aesthetics (Mieke Bal). For the past 15 years, Antonio Jose Guzman has been working on post-colonial theoretical art research involving his Panamanian background and his connection with multiple ancestral places in the world. Electric Dub Station investigates the transatlantic, colonial history of the color indigo, which is related to production on Surinamese plantations, Javanese plantations, Europe, the Netherlands and Gelderland. Research into the history of indigo work is at the same time research into the alternative history of the Dutch nation. Indigo finds its origin in India. The African slave trade made it particularly valuable, the Indigo gunpowder was more powerful than the gun, because it was literally used as a means of payment. African slaves transferred the knowledge of indigo cultivation to America. In the 1700s the profit of indigo was greater than that of sugar and cotton. The sonic structures and songs that the Africans sang in the indigo, sugar and coffee plantations had a profound influence on the history of music in America. The music frequencies were strongly influenced by the African rhythm and led directly to the Blues in the United States, Rumba in Cuba, Cumbia in Colombia, Bossa nova in Brazil and Dub in Jamaica. Dub is the heart of Reggae music and Reggaeton. The impact that Dub has had on contemporary music production can hardly be overestimated. Electric Dub Station is a site-specific installation labyrinth and a Panamanian-Congolese procession. The project is produced for Sonsbeek and the Paiz Art Biennial, Guatemala, and consists of five hundred banner pieces and twenty Afro Futuristic Costumes, made with textile designer Iva Jankovic, the Guatemalan women's weaving cooperative: Trama Textiel and Indigo master Sufiyan Khatri. The costumes and the procession dance are inspired by the traditional rituals of the Maroon people of the Americas and the Sun Ra philosophy (The Father of Afro Futurism). The Dub Sonic structure of Electric Dub Station is composed using Guzman's Panamanian DNA, mixed with Dub echoes, and loops and sounds from Maroon communities. A Dub Poetry work will be simulated during the procession. The Maya have lived in Central America for many centuries. They are one of the many Precolumbian native peoples of Mesoamerica. In the past and today they occupy Guatemala, adjacent portions of Chiapas and Tabasco, the whole of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, and the western edges of Honduras and Salvador. Every Semana Santa, Guatemalans decorate their streets with colorful & intricate sawdust carpets. Before Easter, the streets are decorated with elaborate, colorful alfombras de aserrín – made of sawdust, flowers, palm leaves, and other organic matter that feature religious and cultural figures. For these chapter of the Electric Dub Station series we could not travel to Guatemala, because the pandemic restrictions, but gratefully we collaborated with one of the finest alfombristas in Guatemala City to create Planet Indigo Dust, an electric blue alfombra based on our classic DNA sequence pattern, combined with Mayan patterns and other mesoamerican abstract symbology. The participation of our ongoing decolonization project Electric Dub Station in the Paiz Art Biennial marks a collaboration with one of the most important curators in South America: Alexia Tala. Creating Planet Indigo Dust in Guatemala offers a metaphorical consolidation of‭ ‬a Pan-Maya movement in Guatemala, Abya Yala Movement in The Americas. The 22nd Bienal De Arte Paiz Guatemala invites visitors to reflect on the situation of perpetual crisis that affects the Global South. Artist Antonio José Guzman and textile designer Iva Jankovic explore the colonial history of indigo in a monumental installation of indigo canvases commissioned by the TextielMuseum. The fabrics were embroidered in the TextielLab with symbols from traditional African texts and alphabets, giving new visibility to the African culture that was suppressed by European colonists. In 2021 it was 101 years that the artist Constant was born. On the occasion of this anniversary, Fondation Constant launched the large-scale collaborative project Constant 101. As part of this collaboration, the Cobra Museum of Modern Art organised an exhibition in which, in addition to works by Constant, new work by contemporary artists Antonio Jose Guzman (1971) and Antonis Pittas (1973) were also presented. Diasporic identity is an important theme in Antonio Jose Guzman’s oeuvre. Moreover, he shares Pittas’ interest in the history of modern art. For example, in an earlier project called Piertopolis Guzman responded to Constant’s New Babylon project by portraying the Homo Ludens as a nomadic people who would live in this future metropolis. For this exhibition Guzman created a series of new sculptural figures that partly refer to Constant’s New Babylon. The figures wear textiles with an abstract pattern based on Guzman’s own DNA sequence. Using this sequence, Guzman has developed a genetic conceptual map that shows that his DNA is the result of a route that runs through several continents. This ‘map’ or ‘pattern’ forms the basis for a number of his multidisciplinary projects and also for the new work commissioned by the Cobra Museum. Constant: Constant (Constant Nieuwenhuijs, 1920-2005) was not only an artist but also one of the intellectual driving forces behind the Cobra movement (1948-1951). As such, he can be seen as one of the leading co-founders. In Collaboration with The Wilfredo Lam Centre of Contemporary Art & Detras Del Muro, important institutions within the Havana Biennial, we wanted the project to access public participation and to be as wide as possible. The intentions and ideas behind the Supreme Exodus are to make new spaces that make a connection with the city. As an exile artist in Amsterdam from the Latin American Diaspora, I feel myself reinventing Latin Americaʼs regional identity with projects that are reinforcing the identity of migrant citizens and researching on the idea of Afropolitanism. For the Supreme Exodus I worked with Dutch Servian Designer Iva Jankovic and a team of academic researchers, textile designers, Cuban musicians like Grammy award winner Gaston Joya, Afro Cuban Dancers, producers and ultimately in collaboration with African Tailors, Groninger Museum and with students from the Minerva Art Academy in Groningen. Designed as a ritual space, the installation features dub-inspired sonic sounds which resonate within the structure.⁠ ⁠ At Tate Liverpool +RIBA North, the artists present 'Toxteth Dub / Maps and Orientations from beyond the Blue', 2025.⁠ Part of their ongoing ‘Electric Dub Station’ series, this new work commissioned for Liverpool Biennial 2025, uses a map to examine Liverpool’s colonial legacy. Through an exploration of global histories of rituals, animism, and a variety of socio- cultural identities, each project creates Afrofuturistic landscapes or spaces where mechanisms of power and violence are confronted and questioned. For the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Guzman and Jankovic have continued their series with a new textile installation and performances highlighting the sacred ancestral powers that traveled along with transatlantic trade. Messengers of the Sun encompasses public performances at various locations in the museum building and small-scale rituals in a textile installation in the exhibition space, and explores multiple layers of Black Atlantic interaction—an overarching experience that is not specifically African, American, Caribbean, or British. The public performances take the form of Afrofuturist ceremonial processions dominated by music and dance referring to a fictional story in which the lost children of the prophet Sun Ra are “messengers of the sun.” They live in the Sirius-B galaxy, to which the ancestors from the African diaspora migrated in times of destruction in Sub- Saharan Africa. Monthly cleansing rituals are performed away from the public gaze to honor the ancestral specters and contemporary spirits they summon. Although modest, meditative, and unannounced, these small-scale rituals are just as important as the public processions. Visitors entering the exhibition space encounter monumental banners and an Afrimono, a kimono-style garment that is worn during the performances. The fabrics are made using an Indian Ajrakh block printing technique and sewn with Japanese Boro stitching. The abstract embroidered scriptures on the fabrics are inspired by gris-gris, small talismanic amulets or charms. They originated in West African Islamic traditions and are mostly used by Fulani people. In Muslim communities, illustrators, block printers,
and wood workers do not use figurative elements such as faces or eyes to avoid idolatry. This led to the development of floral or geometrical designs. Messengers of the Sun is a further abstraction of these figures, which could be read as a newly developed abstract alphabet. Users of gris-gris believe these objects have the power to purify the soul and protect the wearer from evil spirits. Under colonial rule, they were brought to the Americas by enslaved African people who used the objects to give them strength and ensure their safe passage across the Atlantic. This led to the introduction of the gris-gris to the southern United States, where they are commonly found to this day in New Orleans, for example. Now, centuries after the European colonizers and church banned their use, Guzman and Jankovic are providing space for the invocation of these talismans’ positive magical powers, and the introduction into the museum space of Afro-Yoruban and Fulani beliefs in the protective powers of sacred rituals. Guzman found his roots are African, Sephardi Jew and Native American. The artist constructed with Amsterdam’s barrel organist Leon Perlee organ books with his DNA. While revealing the artist’s African ancestry, these marks on cloth intimate the collective stories and wisdom that African tribespeople forced into slavery have passed on to those who carry their blood. The genetic sequences appear in indigo blue on fabric, which is dyed in India using traditional techniques, and refer to the cultivation of indigo plants in the Caribbean, which came from Asia and Africa along with the slaves during the colonial period. ADN Soundsistema is a collaboration with the artificial intelligence department of the Panamanian Universidad Tecnologica, together with they build a giant interactive robot with synthetic sensors, extracts of the sequence of the artist’s genes and the interpretation of it. The installation mix sounds in the space according to the different movements of the audience around the sculpture. It means unlimited movement, and this is precisely what director Antonio Jose Guzman does in his project. Guzman got his DNA analysed in the Genographic project from National Geographic and discovered that he is of African, Central and North American, and Jewish Sephardic European lineage. His genetic identity was based on the Diasporas of his forefathers. So how did his parents end up in Panama? In this first part of what ultimately should become a trilogy, Guzman offers up an experimental mix of footage from places where he has roots with interviews and dance. His trip around the world and quest to find himself opens up a wider perspective on the countless surprising connections between the people of all continents. Regressions is part of The Day We Surrender to the Air Trilogy. The film is based on a series of Regressions Guzman did in Vegas in 2009. Past life regression is a technique that uses hypnosis to recover what practitioners believe are memories of past lives or incarnations, though others regard them as fantasies or delusions. Past life regression is typically undertaken either in pursuit of a spiritual experience, or in a psycho therapeutic setting. USMM create different vector patterns in the integral composition of the fabric sequences, using computerised data augmentation techniques to create random design patterns that pushes the DNA sequences to be form in different ways, redesigning in this way the pattern structure of the original DNA sequences used in many of Guzman’s past projects. This technique brings endless possibilities for the use of genetic data, and create a magnificent way for the development of versatile contemporary textile patterns that can be use in analogue traditional technologies. Guzman had studied both traditional embroidery patterns used by Afro Panamanians and ritual cloths used in Native Panamanian culture. Central to this research is that Panamanians of Afro, Spanish and Native decent share a identical DNA pattern. Unitary Sequencing is a synthesis of DNA identify markers, such as genetics tests, genome markers and hand-sewn carpets in Latin America. The concrete function of the repetitive sequencing textile, raises the level of abstraction of the pattern. In the Electric Dub Station series, the artist investigates the connection with different cultures of the Black Atlantic (Paul Gilroy) and hybrid Migratory Aesthetics (Mieke Ball). During the last fifteen years Guzman has focused on postcolonial artistic research linked to his own Panamanian ancestry, and to the origins of indigo in Latin America, Asia and West Africa. This project investigates the transatlantic colonial history of indigo, related to its production on plantations in India, Java, The Americas and in Europe. Influenced by Yoruban Dance, The NYC Theatre company “The Living Theatre” and Iván Nogales theory of Body Decolonisation (La Descolonización del Cuerpo), Electric Dub Station In Surinam and elsewhere in the Americas, blue had the power to protect enslaved Africans and their descendants from evil spirits. Indigo was also the source of incomparable suffering and helped spur the 18th-century transatlantic trade, resulting in the enslavement of thousands. Indigo dye is deeply rooted in African culture. So is the symbolic use of the color blue to ward off evil spirits. In some cultures, indigo, itself has spiritual significance. For the past 15 years, Antonio Jose Guzman has been working on post-colonial theoretical art research involving his Panamanian background and his connection with multiple ancestral places in the world. In this pop-up expo, Guzman works together with Iva Jankovic, researching African, Asian and Latin American indigo dyed textile patterns and investigating the transatlantic, colonial history of the color indigo. The natural blue Indigo was grown on various plantations in Suriname. Research into the history of indigo dye is at the same time an exploration into the colonial history of the Dutch nation and its economic impact on today's global economy. Indigo finds its origins in India, Africa, China and Latin America. The African slave trade made it particularly valuable. The sonic structures and songs that the Africans sang in the indigo, sugar and coffee plantations had a profound influence on the history of music in the Americas. The impact that Dub has had on contemporary music production can hardly be overestimated. Guzman and Jankovic reinterpret the history of sacred indigo textiles, which are deeply connected with colonial histories and the trade of enslaved Africans who carried the expertise of cultivating indigo with them to the Americas. The textiles in the installation feature an abstract pattern of intercultural DNA sequences that embody a global connection between the Black Atlantic. The textiles are printed at the Ajrakh workshop of Sufiyan Khatri in Ajrakhpur, India. Taking the form of an Afrofuturist ceremonial procession led by music and dancers, the performance moves through the museum. The title refers to a mythical story in which the lost children of the prophet Sun Ra are “messengers of the sun.” They live in the Sirius-B galaxy, to which ancestors from the African diaspora migrated in times of destruction in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project was co-conceived by visual artists Antonio Jose Guzman and Iva Jankovic. Together, they reinterpret the transatlantic colonial history of indigo-blue textiles, which is deeply connected with the colonial and slavery history of the Netherlands; the textiles were made particularly valuable by the African slave trade. In the installation and the performers’ garments, the indigo color represents the diasporic, cultural, and economic history of textile trade and memories of ancient spirits that are woven or saturated into the fabrics. Moreover, indigo is thought to have sacred ancestral powers, and through Messengers of the Sun, these spiritual powers are connected to the museum space and brought to the viewer of the performance.
